About the Government Actuary’s Department
The Government Actuary’s Department (GAD) provides actuarial and specialist analysis, advice and assurance to support effective decision-making and robust reporting in the public sector in the UK and around the world.
We seek to achieve a high standard in all our work and we are accredited under the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ Quality Assurance Scheme. We are also part of the Civil Service’s Analysis Function. This is made up of professionals including actuaries, economists, statisticians and data scientists all working on projects which make a difference to the wider public.
The work we do
We advise government on significant policy initiatives where understanding and quantifying financial risks are critical elements of good decision-making. In particular we provide advice on pensions, student loans and risk-pooling arrangements such as those for clinical negligence claims.
Our goal is to integrate analytical and actuarial techniques into the business of government to achieve better outcomes for decision-makers and the public. Further details of our work can be found in the GAD Services section.
As a Junior Trainee Actuary you will produce client advice and provide accurate, high quality and timely actuarial analysis, to support your team and the GAD. Your role may sit within any of the internal teams that sit within the GAD, each of which is responsible for a specific area of advice. As you progress in your career, you will have the opportunity to rotate within these teams and to support the different specialist areas of the GAD.
Who we look for
Over the course of a career with GAD you will engage in different projects. We look for actuaries, analysts and trainees who are able to adapt to, and become experts in, our wide range of work.
We expect our people to be able to confidently explain the results of our analysis to decision-makers in government. Staff also need to work closely with clients to help them best use our analytical support.
We are committed to diversity and promote equality of opportunity. We recruit, train and promote people regardless of race, colour, religion, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation or disability.
